Thermostat Checklist to Know If It's Working Properly

When your HVAC system suddenly breaks down, or some parts of it did not work properly, you will probably blame the system itself. Try to think the other way! In some instances, your thermostat might be the cause of the problem. And when it fails, your indoor comfort will surely suffer from inconsistent temperature.

How to Troubleshoot Your Thermostat

Any problem with the thermostat deserves professional attention, but you can do initial checkups to find the cause of the issue. Our experts at A-TEMP provide a thermostat checklist for your guide.

  • Check your power source for blown fuses, burnt wires or tripped breakers. Examine each part to identify where the fault lies.
  • See if the battery is still working. If it is dead, then it needs replacement as soon as possible.
  • Dust, dirt and even spider web may invade your thermostat, making it work harder than usual. Massive dirt buildup can cover some parts of the thermostat that can affect its mechanical and electrical components. Do not neglect cleaning and dusting your thermostat on a regular basis to avoid premature damage.
  • Unplug the power source then inspect the wirings thoroughly to see if there are loose or corroded wires. Check your owner’s manual for the step-by-step procedure. As a preventive measure, do not touch anything on the wirings unless you are well acquainted with them.
  • Check your indoor temperature. Does it match with the thermostat setting? If you think that the temperature and setting do not match, you need to check both the location and leveling of your thermostat. The position should neither be in forward-facing of your windows and door nor under direct sunlight because it can compromise the temperature parameter.
  • For those with mechanical thermostats, make sure to check the setting of the anticipator. Your owner’s manual can help you find the right anticipator setting based on the directions specified in the guide.
  • Keep an eye on your thermostat and take note how often it turns on and off on a daily or weekly basis. If it happens more often than its normal operation, call your HVAC contractor to inspect and provide solutions immediately.

Your thermostat is essential to your heating and cooling system. And when it fails, you would not want to stay indoors for a long time this summer season.

Quality Service That Will Make You Smile

"Helpful, friendly, and trustworthy service."

A-TEMP Heating, Cooling & Electrical came recommended from a friend who is a current inspector. I've used them for years for furnace and AC maintenance. Their customer service is excellent—helpful, friendly, and persistent in scheduling my maintenance. I appreciate that they've never pushed to replace my old furnace but instead helped me decide when to repair or replace without being pushy about sales. Finding trustworthy repair folks is hard, and I highly recommend them. You won't be disappointed.

A-TEMP Heating, Cooling & Electrical did a wonderful job. They were on time, wore shoe coverings, and worked diligently. They replaced our air filter and an electrical part under warranty, explaining everything clearly. The work was clean and professional, and the team was congenial and pleasant.

"Polite, positive, and very courteous."

Everyone we’ve dealt with has been polite, positive, and very courteous. A-TEMP Heating, Cooling & Electrical quickly replaced our furnace during the coldest part of a snowy winter. Other companies couldn’t get out for 1-2 weeks, but A-TEMP assessed it the same day and replaced it in 2 days. Can’t say enough great things about this company!
