How to Set Your Thermostat This Summer

The war of the thermostats may never be truly over, but knowing which temperatures are best for your family — both in comfort and energy efficiency — can make the struggle a little less brutal.

Adjust the Thermostat Seasonally

When you live in a climate with all four seasons, it’s important to remember that your temperature needs will change with the weather. The U.S. Department of Energy recommends keeping your thermostats set within ten degrees of the outside air for the best energy savings possible.

What’s the best temperature?

Everyone has different preferences for their perfect temperature, but there are general guidelines you can easily follow. The American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) regards 72°F as the perfect temperature for maximum comfort at home.

Set Your Thermostat for Energy Savings

The mid to low-seventies may be your best bet for comfort, if your goal is to save money on your energy bills, you’ll need to change things up a little bit.

  • In summer, set your air conditioner to 78°F for optimal energy savings.
  • In winter, set the thermostat to 68°F and use some passive heating strategies to keep your home as warm as possible.

Setting your thermostat to an energy-efficient temperature can save you money on energy bills and unit repairs, but it’s essential to set up your thermostat correctly to receive the full benefits.

Other Considerations

Did you know the location of your thermostat can change its readout? Place your thermostat on an interior wall and keep it away from anything that could produce its own heat, such as:

  • Large kitchen appliances
  • Electrical appliances and equipment such as TVs, lamps, etc.
  • Direct sunlight
  • Vents

Quality Service That Will Make You Smile

"Helpful, friendly, and trustworthy service."

A-TEMP Heating, Cooling & Electrical came recommended from a friend who is a current inspector. I've used them for years for furnace and AC maintenance. Their customer service is excellent—helpful, friendly, and persistent in scheduling my maintenance. I appreciate that they've never pushed to replace my old furnace but instead helped me decide when to repair or replace without being pushy about sales. Finding trustworthy repair folks is hard, and I highly recommend them. You won't be disappointed.

"Clean and professional work."

A-TEMP Heating, Cooling & Electrical did a wonderful job. They were on time, wore shoe coverings, and worked diligently. They replaced our air filter and an electrical part under warranty, explaining everything clearly. The work was clean and professional, and the team was congenial and pleasant.

"Polite, positive, and very courteous."

Everyone we’ve dealt with has been polite, positive, and very courteous. A-TEMP Heating, Cooling & Electrical quickly replaced our furnace during the coldest part of a snowy winter. Other companies couldn’t get out for 1-2 weeks, but A-TEMP assessed it the same day and replaced it in 2 days. Can’t say enough great things about this company!
