Spring may not officially start until March 20, but seasonal allergies don’t wait for a date to kick in. In fact, spring allergies can start as early as February. Allergies aren’t easily avoided (especially in a time when outdoor spaces are some of our only refuges), but thankfully, there are many ways to treat common spring allergies.
What causes spring allergies?
There are four common causes of spring allergies:
- Tree pollen
- Dust mites
- Grass pollen
- Mold
Tree Pollen
Late winter and early spring is when trees come alive with new leaves and fresh blooms—but this return to life also brings pollen. Tree pollen is the top cause of spring allergies for most people, but different kinds of pollen are released from different trees throughout the country.
Treatment Tip: Protect yourself from tree pollen by checking the pollen forecast online and keeping windows closed on high pollen count days.
Dust Mites
Dust mites can be found anywhere that dust can be found—which means almost any space in your home isn’t safe. Dust mites and dust mite waste are commonly found in carpets, bedding, upholstery, and other fabrics.
Treatment Tip: Vacuuming weekly can help reduce the levels of allergens inside your home.
Grass Pollen
Three main types of grass are the major contributors of grass pollen. Kentucky Blue Grass—common in Northern states—can produce “severe allergenic pollen”. These allergens are affected by temperature, rain, and time of day.
Treatment Tip: Avoid going outside after a rain and in the early morning when pollen counts are at their highest.
Mold
Did you know that mold stays dormant in cold temperatures and starts actively growing again in spring? Mold can be found in areas with excess moisture both indoors and outdoors.
Treatment Tip: Check areas such as underneath sinks and in the basement to make sure there isn’t mold growing where it could be circulated into your air supply.
