FAQ: Ceiling Fans
July 18, 2019

Every summer, we deal with the same battle of trying to stay cool in the midst of the heat and humidity. Well, one way to do this is with ceiling fans. If you don’t utilize ceiling fans already, you’ll want to once you’re done reading this FAQ.

How does a ceiling fan keep me cool?

Contrary to popular belief, a ceiling fan does not cool the room down, but rather it directly cools the people in the room, which is one reason you should not leave your fan running at all times. They do this by creating a wind-chill effect with the rotation of the blades. When the air is pushed down into the room, it has a cooling effect on your body.

If you run an air conditioning unit at the same time as your ceiling fan, you could raise the temperature on your thermostat by up to 4 degrees and maintain the same level of comfort.

Are there different settings on ceiling fans?

Yes, there are! Ceiling fans have a number of different settings on them that regulate the speed of the blade rotation, the lights on the fan, and the direction of the blade rotation. A lot of people don’t know that their ceiling fans blade rotation can switch from clockwise to counter-clockwise and vice versa.

The purpose of this rotation change directs whether air is pushed up toward the ceiling or down into the room. In the middle of summer, you’ll want your ceiling fan rotating in the counterclockwise direction which will push air down into the room, creating a wind-chill effect for those occupying the room. Likewise, in winter, you’ll want the fan rotating clockwise to help circulate the hot air that your furnace is generating.

What size ceiling fan do I need?

The size of your ceiling fan should depend entirely on the size of your room, a fan that is too small will not be effective in a large room while a large fan in a small room would be a waste of money. Additionally, ceiling fans are most effective in rooms that are at least 8 feet high so that the blades are at least 7 feet above the floor and 10 inches from the ceiling.

If you have any additional questions about how a ceiling fan can help keep you cool in the summer, don’t hesitate to reach out to the experts at A-TEMP Heating, Cooling, & Electrical.energ

"Helpful, friendly, and trustworthy service."

A-TEMP Heating, Cooling & Electrical came recommended from a friend who is a current inspector. I've used them for years for furnace and AC maintenance. Their customer service is excellent—helpful, friendly, and persistent in scheduling my maintenance. I appreciate that they've never pushed to replace my old furnace but instead helped me decide when to repair or replace without being pushy about sales. Finding trustworthy repair folks is hard, and I highly recommend them. You won't be disappointed.

Everyone we’ve dealt with has been polite, positive, and very courteous. A-TEMP Heating, Cooling & Electrical quickly replaced our furnace during the coldest part of a snowy winter. Other companies couldn’t get out for 1-2 weeks, but A-TEMP assessed it the same day and replaced it in 2 days. Can’t say enough great things about this company!
