4 Safety Tips for Checking Your Circuit Breaker

Circuit Breaker Safety

Have you been experiencing electrical troubles at home? It might be time to check the circuit breakers. Below, we’ve listed a few safety tips and precautions you should keep in mind as you attempt this household task.

How to safely check your circuit breaker:
  • Identify the tripped breaker - The tripped breaker will typically make a humming sound when it has been overloaded but not switched off. You’ll find the tripped breaker between the on and off position in the circuit box.
  • Test the breakers - This part requires some trial and error. You have to check the lever to see how loose it is. You should feel some resistance when moving the lever from on to off and vice versa. If you don’t feel any resistance when switching the breaker this indicates that something is wrong. If you ever find that your breaker is faulty you should replace it as quickly as possible.
  • Turn off appliances - If you have any appliances connected to this circuit breaker you should turn them off, and make sure to do it all at once. The last thing you want is a power surge when everything is turned back on. If your circuit breaker keeps tripping, then you should call a professional right away.

One reason your circuit breakers could be tripping so frequently is faulty wiring. In cases of wiring issues, it’s best to have a professional come out and check out your electrical problems in order to prevent further damage and injury. Faulty wiring inside the home is dangerous not something to mess around with.

Dealing with electricity is never a task that should be taken lightly. This can be extremely dangerous for the one working directly with the wiring and for those around them, so call a professional to handle your more difficult electrical projects.

Quality Service That Will Make You Smile

"Helpful, friendly, and trustworthy service."

A-TEMP Heating, Cooling & Electrical came recommended from a friend who is a current inspector. I've used them for years for furnace and AC maintenance. Their customer service is excellent—helpful, friendly, and persistent in scheduling my maintenance. I appreciate that they've never pushed to replace my old furnace but instead helped me decide when to repair or replace without being pushy about sales. Finding trustworthy repair folks is hard, and I highly recommend them. You won't be disappointed.

"Clean and professional work."

A-TEMP Heating, Cooling & Electrical did a wonderful job. They were on time, wore shoe coverings, and worked diligently. They replaced our air filter and an electrical part under warranty, explaining everything clearly. The work was clean and professional, and the team was congenial and pleasant.

"Polite, positive, and very courteous."

Everyone we’ve dealt with has been polite, positive, and very courteous. A-TEMP Heating, Cooling & Electrical quickly replaced our furnace during the coldest part of a snowy winter. Other companies couldn’t get out for 1-2 weeks, but A-TEMP assessed it the same day and replaced it in 2 days. Can’t say enough great things about this company!
