Prep Your Home for Vacation

packing a suitcase

Summer has finally arrived, so it's time to start planning your next vacation. Whether it's just a weekend away or a grand adventure, you'll want to ensure your home is in order before heading out on your trip.

This will ensure that your return from your vacation is as smooth and enjoyable as possible.

Prep Your HVAC

Start by giving your HVAC system a tune-up. This will help your home stay cool (or warm, depending on the season) while you're away and can also prevent any unwanted surprises upon your return. Make sure to turn off any scheduled temperature programming that you have set and turn the thermostat up to 80 to 85 degrees. There is no point in cooling an empty home.

We don't recommend shutting the system all the way off unless you plan on being gone for weeks at a time. IT requires a lot of energy to restart the system, so it's more efficient to leave it on at a higher temperature setting most of the time.

Prep Your Plumbing

Next, check all your plumbing fixtures and appliances to ensure they're in good working order. Running a faucet or flushing a toilet before you leave will help you identify any potential issues and avoid coming home to a flooded bathroom.

If you're going to be gone for a while, we recommend turning off the water to your house at the main supply line. This will prevent any major flooding or damage in the event of a plumbing disaster.

Prep Your Electrical

Finally, take a look at your electrical outlets and appliances. Unplug any unnecessary electronics and make sure that everything is turned off. This will not only save you money on your energy bill but can also help prevent any accidents while you're away.

With just a little bit of preparation, you can rest assured knowing that your home is in good hands while you're gone. Give us a call at (503) 694-3396 if you need any assistance getting your home in tip-top shape! Enjoy your vacation!
